ES Solar is a frustrating file to read, because the license story and the conduct story pull in opposite directions. Start with what is strong. Utah DOPL licenses solar contracting through the S202 Solar Photovoltaic classification, and ES Solar is the only company in our Utah track that holds it, alongside E200 general electrical and B100 general building, on Active license 13589996-5501. BBB dates the business to June 30, 2009, rates it A+, and shows accreditation since December 2022. The company publishes a lifetime warranty covering labor and parts plus a production guarantee. On paper, that is an A profile.
The record says otherwise. DOPL issued citation 47884 against ES Solar for Aiding Unlicensed Practice on May 17, 2024, an $800 fine now marked Paid. That is a government enforcement action, and under our rubric it caps the grade at D regardless of everything above. Worth noting: the citation predates the S202 qualifier association of September 19, 2024 by four months. The complaint file is heavy too, with 52 BBB complaints in the last 3 years and 22 closed in the last 12 months, 27 of them service or repair issues. Recent complaint themes include sales representations about eliminating power bills and tax incentives, monitoring subscription fees and cancellation difficulty, and slow service response. There is also Butcher v ES Solar, a Truth in Lending suit filed April 2024 in the District of Utah naming ES Solar, Energy Savers, NBT Bank, and Sungage Financial; the fetched docket ends at a May 2024 motion to dismiss, so the outcome is not shown.
One more oddity. A 2009-vintage Layton company claiming operations in six states appears on neither the 2026 Solar Power World national list nor the 14-row Utah list. SPW participation is voluntary, so absence proves nothing by itself, but it means no third party has verified this company's installation volume in our evidence. Should you get a quote? Only if you go in clear-eyed: the license and warranty language are genuinely better than most, and the enforcement and complaint record is genuinely worse. If you proceed, get the lifetime warranty and production guarantee terms in writing, read the financing paperwork slowly, and pin down any monitoring subscription costs before you sign.

BBB dates the business start and incorporation to June 30, 2009, with the BBB file opened December 7, 2017. The company site claims over 16 years of experience, which is consistent with that date. The DOPL contractor license itself carries an original issue date of November 30, 2023.

This D is a cap, not an average. The rubric treats any government enforcement action as a ceiling because a state citation is a finding, not an opinion, and DOPL cited this company for aiding unlicensed practice in 2024. The strong parts of the record, the S202 classification, the 2009 start, the published lifetime warranty, are all real and all in the evidence above. Weigh them yourself.
