Installer profile
Sandbox Solar
Sandbox Solar is worth a quote on the Front Range, and it clears a bar most local installers miss: independent volume evidence. Solar Power World ranks it 269 on the 2026 Top Solar Contractors list and 106 on the 2026 Top Solar Installers list, with 2,927.86 kW installed in 2025. Almost every profile we grade relies on the company's own customer counts. This one has a third party number.
On licensing, understand how Colorado works before comparing this record to a California profile. Colorado has no statewide solar contractor license; the state lane is an electrical contractor registration with the State Electrical Board through DORA. Sandbox Solar LLC holds registration EC.0101814, active, originally issued 05/15/2020 and running to 09/30/2029, with no discipline or board actions on file. Its responsible individual since 02/21/2024 is master electrician Daniel Frey, ME.3001274, active by examination with no discipline, and the registration lists a roster of supervised electrical apprentices with Sandbox as employer, which fits the site's claim that solar work is handled in house. The one lane we could not check: the City of Fort Collins requires contractor licensing but exposes no public license search, so city status is unverified.
The soft spots are consumer facing. BBB shows the company as not accredited and Not Rated, stating it lacks sufficient information to issue a rating, with no complaint counts displayed and 11 years in business from a 4/6/2015 start. The single displayed review is negative: a customer saying the company will not cover faulty solar panels without significant charge. One review proves nothing by itself, but it points at the same gap we found elsewhere, because no workmanship warranty duration or scope appears anywhere on the fetched pages. Ask for the warranty in writing before you sign.
The evidence
BBB records the business start and incorporation as 4/6/2015 and shows 11 years in business, and the company's about page says it started in 2015 with just a toolbox and an old Subaru. The DORA electrical contractor registration was originally issued 05/15/2020, five years into operation, which is consistent rather than contradictory since the registration lane postdates the founding.

DORA states there is no discipline or board actions on file for EC.0101814, BBB displays no government actions, and enforcement searches found nothing. But BBB is Not Rated for insufficient information, displays no complaint counts, and its single displayed review is negative, saying the company will not cover faulty solar panels without significant charge. The state record is clean; the consumer record is simply thin.

Solar Power World lists Sandbox Solar at rank 269 on the 2026 Top Solar Contractors list and rank 106 on the 2026 Top Solar Installers list, with 2,927.86 kW installed in 2025. That is an independently published figure, not a company claim, and it is the strongest single piece of evidence in this profile.
Colorado has no statewide solar contractor license, so the verifiable lane is the DORA electrical contractor registration. Sandbox Solar LLC holds EC.0101814, Electrical Contractor, active, originally issued 05/15/2020, effective 10/01/2026 and expiring 09/30/2029, with no discipline on file, and master electrician Daniel Frey ME.3001274 is its responsible individual. Fort Collins city license status could not be publicly verified because the city has no contractor license search.

No workmanship warranty duration or scope is stated on the fetched homepage or about page. The site says solar services are handled in house with a full guarantee of the quality of the end product, but a guarantee with no published terms is not verifiable coverage, and the one displayed BBB review disputes how panel problems were handled.

How to read this
This grade rests on two verified pillars, a clean state registration and an independently published installation figure, and it docks the profile for what nobody published: warranty terms and a readable BBB record. Colorado grading is structurally different from states with a solar specific license, so compare Colorado profiles against each other. Before signing, get the workmanship warranty in writing and ask how panel defects are handled, since that is exactly what the one public review disputes. Our full rubric, including how our own installation business gets graded on the same scale, is on the methodology page. We are a solar installer and we partner with other solar companies. Grading is structurally separated from revenue; see disclosures.
