Colorado has no solar specific contractor license, so the credential that counts is the electrical contractor registration with the State Electrical Board through DORA. Steel City holds EC.0100798, active, first issued June 6, 2016, current term running to September 30, 2029. The responsible master electrician on that registration, James Devon Brown, ME.0600639, is the same James Brown the about page names as founder, and BBB lists him as an owner alongside co-owner and CFO Tyler Surat. Six registered apprentice electricians sit on the license in an employer relationship, which is the state side signature of a real in house crew, not a sales office that farms out installs. The founding date holds up everywhere we looked: the site says May 2016, BBB records a business start of May 12, 2016, and the state registration followed on June 6, 2016.

The complaint record is short and, on inspection, not really about them. BBB rates the company A+ and has accredited it since September 16, 2019. The live complaints page shows 1 complaint in the last 3 years and 1 closed in the last 12 months. That one complaint, filed December 9, 2025 and answered, was a service call billing dispute from a customer whose system had been installed by a different, now defunct installer; the company response states it did not buy out the contracts of Axco or Big Dog. One caveat: an older index capture of the same page showed 4 complaints in 3 years, so the count has moved between captures. No DORA discipline, no attorney general action, and no lawsuit naming the company turned up.

Two gaps keep this at a B. First, warranty. Nothing we fetched states a workmanship warranty duration. The FAQ points to the 25 year power performance warranty most panel manufacturers offer, and the Tesla page cites the 10 year Powerwall manufacturer warranty. Those cover equipment, not the roof penetrations or the wiring behind your meter. Second, volume. Steel City appears on neither the 2026 Solar Power World national list nor the Colorado list, so its scale rests on company claims and local awards (Best of Pueblo wins documented 2019 through 2024). One timing note: James Brown's own master electrician term shows an expiration of September 30, 2026, days after this data pull. Renewal is routine, but check the record before you sign, and get a workmanship term in writing while you are at it.
