Unbound Solar should not be evaluated as a solar installer, so this page assigns no grade. The Fullerton listing belongs to Unbound Renewable Energy, Inc., the national DIY equipment company that operated as Wholesale Solar until an October 2020 name change. Its own homepage says it: We Design and Ship, You Self-Install. The quote page describes the choices as full DIY, hiring a local crew, or a mix, and says the company is based in Fullerton and ships nationwide. The homepage's advertised 4.7 Google rating with 570 reviews matches the Fullerton Maps listing exactly, which is how we confirmed the storefront and the national retailer are the same thing.
The license record confirms it from the other direction. A CSLB business-name search for UNBOUND returned nothing at all, the results jump straight past where the name would sit alphabetically. A supplemental search on the old Wholesale Solar name found only an unrelated suspended Redding entity that nothing in the record connects to this company. A retailer that does not contract for construction does not need a CSLB license, so the absence is consistent, not incriminating. The paper trail is genuinely tangled, though: the 2020 press release is datelined Ashland, Oregon and cites Mount Shasta, California origins and a 2002 launch, BBB lists a Beaverton, Oregon address with a 2007 incorporation, and the quote page now says Fullerton. BBB rates it B minus as a Solar Energy Equipment Dealer with 2 complaints in 3 years, one a refund dispute after a shipment matched the wrong quote, one an equipment compatibility claim that went unanswered. Buy equipment here if DIY is your plan. Just know that the person legally responsible for the installation on your roof will be you or whoever you hire, not Unbound.

The 2020 name-change release says the business launched in 2002, and the homepage claims 20 years in business. BBB shows incorporation on July 1, 2007 and a business start of March 29, 2018. The about page could not be fetched, so no single company founding page exists in this record and the dates do not reconcile.
BBB rates Unbound Renewable Energy, Inc. B minus, not accredited, attributing the rating to failure to respond to 1 complaint, with 2 complaints in the last 3 years: a January 2024 refund dispute claiming $2,039.67 owed against $1,129.53 refunded, and a March 2023 unanswered claim that optimizers sold as compatible were not, stranding roughly $1,400 of equipment. No government enforcement was found.

The homepage claims 20,000 plus successfully installed systems, which for this business model means systems shipped and installed by customers or their local crews, not by Unbound. No entry appears on the 2026 or 2025 Solar Power World lists reviewed, which is expected for a company that installs nothing itself.

No installation workmanship warranty is stated on the fetched pages, and none could exist in the installer sense because the company ships equipment rather than performing installations. Whoever installs the system, you or a local contractor, is the party whose labor warranty matters.

How to read this
The N/A badge means this business sits outside the installer rubric, not that it failed it. Grading a mail-order equipment house on license and workmanship criteria would be wrong in both directions. If you are considering the DIY route, the questions that matter are return terms, restocking fees, equipment compatibility in writing, and who handles a warranty claim on a panel you installed yourself. If you want someone else legally on the hook for the work, hire a CSLB-licensed contractor and have them source the equipment.
